Hi there, and welcome to Chive with Me! My name is Lauren, the recipe creator, photographer, and writer behind this blog. Food and nutrition is a passion of mine, and I’m so excited you are here to cook, learn and chive with me!
I’m a food and nutrition enthusiast, a former volleyball player turned triathlete, and a dark chocolate, dog-loving Canadian. I hope you enjoy making and fueling yourselves with these recipes, just as much as I have enjoyed creating them.
How I got here:
I grew up in a small town, just outside of Toronto, Ontario, but lived, worked, and studied in Toronto for 6 years, so I guess I would consider myself a Torontonian! I have a Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition and Food from Ryerson University and my Precision Nutrition certification in sports nutrition.
So why food!? Well…why not food! My passion began well before university. Growing up, I was always a competitive athlete, and found myself constantly researching what to feed myself in order to reach peak performance. I was packing my own lunches for school for as long as I can remember (sorry mom and dad, those bologna sandwiches just didn’t cut it…), and was always the one my friends and teammates had questions for regarding food. Throughout high school, I quickly realized that this is what I love to do:. help people live healthier lives by improving what they are fueling their bodies with!
So off I went to university, where my classes consisted of labs where we made food, and ate a ton of it. Just kidding, I learned some stuff too. My degree was a combination of nutrition basics, food science, physiology, chemistry, and all the many factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. During my studies, I was a member and captain of the varsity women’s volleyball team. It was awesome to be able to apply what I was learning every day in the classroom to my day-to-day life. I owe a lot to the sport; it brought me some lifelong friends, amazing life skills, and a lot of incredible memories. Then graduation hit…I was no longer an athlete, or a student, and struggled to find something new that excited me the same way that learning or competing did. So, I turned to triathlons. The feeling I get while racing in the water, or speeding down hills on my bike, or running past my family and friends cheering me on is indescribable and unmatched. I have truly found a new challenging and exhilarating passion. Training and competing as a triathlete also increased my knowledge. I had to change my diet, learn new ways to stay fuelled and hydrated, and manage my nutrition throughout rigorous training and races.
I have worked and volunteered in the nutrition field throughout the past few years, including presenting and supplying youth sports teams with nutrition seminars and meal plans, as well as assisting in planning menus for athletes competing at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto. When I’m not training, some of my favourite things are; playing with my super cute rescue dog named Cooper, spending time with my friends, family and boyfriend (the brains and brawn behind this website), reading books, travelling and coaching volleyball.
Now here we are! Chive with Me! This blog is here to show you that healthy eating can be fun, simple, and very rewarding! Although I don’t follow a particular diet, I believe that fuelling your body for what it specifically requires will gain great results in the way you feel. You will find a variety of recipes, and I promise you will find something you love! I am also looking forward to applying my education and athletic experiences to provide you with knowledge on nutritional information, as well as some athletic applications. I’m so excited you have decided to join me on this journey, so let’s chive together!
